about
This song emerged from a kind of artistic deprivation—the heartache of not being able to make and experience music with other people. This time has been a great one for reflection and meditation, and I’ve been wanting to reach you so much sooner with some kind of vibration (thank you for waiting until September for Transience Of Life btw), so here is something for today. The song “When We Used To” will be on no album. It stands alone in its immediacy. I will try not to go down a quantum theory rabbit hole about all of us being these lone fallen trees in our own unheard forests…
What I’m trying to say is, please consider this song a love letter: To all of my fellow musicians, music makers, creators, to all of you beautiful listeners, dancers, participants, witnesses—I miss making music with you. I miss listening to live music. Whether I’ve done it with you personally, or not, no matter. I feel how we are all connected, and I know you are likely feeling some of these same things. Until we meet again. From my heart to yours, Jennifer Charles
Created with my brilliant musical brothers Thomas Bartlett and Oren Bloedow
lyrics
When we used to
Reach through
The ectoplasm
One mind
One ear
Beyond orgasm
Music sweet
Music ready to receive you
Music how do we now
Retrieve you
I believe in you
And in you only
Will you let us in
Ever again
We're so lonely
I need you
I need you
Make music with me
I need you
I need you
Make music in me
Like each living thing
Demands to be free
I need you
I need to
Make music in me
I need to believe in you
Make music with me
Make music

EF fans will love this new side of Jennifer Charles. A little more swing, a little more jazz, but still has that lovely feeling of music from another era. Just as essential as any EF album, but with a different feel. Can't wait to hear more! jed316
